History of Disabilities Presentation

Dr. Kiesling's presentation was very enlightening for me. While I always knew that society's treatment toward individuals with disabilities has not always been the best, I never truly understood how horrific that treatment used to be. I was shocked to see how people with disabilities in the 20th century were viewed as delinquents and "burdens" on the families that they were born into, just because they possessed "differences". What is even more shocking is that this occurred not too long ago.

While the history of disabilities is dark, it is inspiring to see how far the United States has come. The changes that have been made since the 20th century make me excited for the growth that is still yet to come. This growth will not happen on its own, though, but instead with the help of us as a society. It is up to us to continue to include and advocate for those with disabilities. After this presentation, I am happy to be entering a profession that embraces differences and bases a person upon "what matters to you" rather than "what's the matter with you".
