Era Presentations
The Era presentations have been my favorite assignment of OT school so far. It was so much fun to get to know and share ideas with my group. I also loved seeing what the other groups came up with, and the candy was a big plus :)
What interested me the most, though, was how a certain occupation can change so much throughout the years. For example, talking on the phone is an occupation that has changed extremely throughout the ages. The first commercial cell phone was sold in 1983, cost $4000, and weighed 2 pounds. Back in the 80's, talking on the phone was an occupation that was not as accessible due to the expensive price, and probably was not as essential to everyday functioning as much as it is nowadays.
In the 1990s, cell phones continued to get smaller and less expensive, and the amount of people who used them continued to grow. In 1994, 61 million people were using cell phones and pagers. This increase shows that people were beginning to embrace the quicker communication that cell phones provided. In the 2000s, most cell phones held text messaging capabilities. This quick communication that was literally at people's fingertips revolutionized how society interacted with one another.
Fast forward to now, it is crazy to see how far cellphones have come throughout the years. What once started as something that was unaccessible and alien has now become something that almost everyone uses. The telephone has completely changed how our society communicates with one another, with both good and bad results. Talking and texting on the phone has allowed people to stay in touch with one another, but has also had many unintentional side effects such as bad posture from staying hunched over, poor social skills, depression, anxiety, and much more.
Overall, the Era Presentations were a lot of fun and made me so excited to see what else OT school has in store!
