Neurological Outpatient Rehab Setting

Prior to starting OT school, I had the chance to work in multiple settings including a pediatric outpatient clinic and a neurological outpatient clinic. While I have always loved working with children with special needs and would love to possibly work in the pediatric setting, my eyes were opened to an entire new world of OT once I started working as a tech in the neuro setting at Sage Rehabilitation and Outpatient Day Neuro Clinic in Baton Rouge.

After working in this area, I now have a newfound love for working with individuals who have suffered strokes, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and individuals who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, and so much more. I was only able to work in this setting for 6 months before starting OT school, but during that time I witnessed so many incredible feats and had the privilege of meeting some of the most beautiful human beings. From helping a grandfather with a SCI learn how to pass a basketball with his grandson again, to helping a mother who had suffered a stroke learn a new way to cook her children's favorite meals, the clients never ceased to amaze me.

It always amazed me how two people could have the same diagnosis, but their treatments and goals were never alike. The OT practitioners that worked in this particular setting always found a way to gear their interventions toward what was most meaningful to the client and in the most creative ways. I also loved how each therapy session was just as important as the session before and after. In other words, the therapists put just as much passion and work into helping a client learn how to tie their shoes as they did in helping a client learn how to walk.

Wherever I may work in the future, I will always carry my experiences from working at Sage Rehab with me.
