Activity Analysis of Drinking Coffee

Each morning, I wake up and make myself a cup of coffee. For this assignment, I will focus on the act of picking up my cup of coffee and bringing it to my mouth to take a sip. The main joint that contributes to this activity is the elbow joint. Starting off, my elbow is flexed at 90° and my wrist is in a neutral position. After I pick up my cup of coffee, my elbow flexes to bring the cup to my mouth. To bring the coffee back down to the table, my elbow extends. The motion of flexion and extension at the elbow occur in the sagittal plane about the coronal axis. The Biceps are the primary movers in this movement, which perform a concentric contraction to bring the coffee cup up and an eccentric contraction to extend and put the coffee back down. The osteokinematics of the elbow joint for this motion are flexion and extension. The arthrokinematics of the elbow joint include the concave ulna rotating about the convex humerus. During flexion, the ulna rolls and glides anteriorly, and during extension the ulna rolls and glides posteriorly.
